About us

Fraserburgh roots.
Ambition without limits.

Broch Martial Arts is a non-profit community interest company martial arts gym, operated by Broch Combat Centre CIC. We’re bringing together MMA, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and boxing with one ambition: to build a competitive fight team that represents Fraserburgh with pride and puts our town on the combat sports map.

Alongside that competitive ambition sits a wider purpose: making martial arts accessible, affordable and welcoming. Whether you want to compete, improve your fitness or try something new, we want you to have a place to train, build confidence and feel part of a community.

More opportunities. Fewer barriers.

We want to encourage more women and girls into martial arts and create opportunities for young people to develop skills, discipline and confidence with positive support around them.

Our plans include structured youth programmes, subsidised memberships for people facing financial barriers, and activities to support people in addiction recovery. These programmes are in development as we work towards the funding, partnerships and arrangements needed to deliver them.

Our goal is to develop strong fighters and a stronger community, with opportunities that reach beyond the gym.

Our disciplines

Find your way to train.

Four disciplines. A shared commitment to learning, respect and progression.

Mixed Martial Arts

Connect every part of your game.

MMA brings together striking, wrestling and submission grappling in one sport. Modern MMA grew from contests between different martial arts, developing into a discipline that connects techniques from boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Kris Rafferty · MMA Head Coach

Kris brings almost two decades of competing and coaching in MMA, alongside coach Ryan Watt, who also has almost two decades in the sport. Their combined experience supports the transition between striking, takedowns and ground work, as well as fitness and competition preparation.

Marc Simpson and Ryan Donald also support the classes. Marc brings competitive experience across MMA, boxing and K1, alongside more than eight years as a personal trainer. Ryan’s background includes five British Sanda titles, a European Sanda title and a Scottish Professional K1 title, adding considerable striking and fight-preparation experience.

Muay Thai

Thailand’s art of eight limbs.

Originating in Thailand, Muay Thai combines punches, kicks, knees, elbows and clinch work. Known as the “art of eight limbs”, it develops timing, balance, fitness and technique while retaining a strong tradition of respect.

Barry Stephen · Muay Thai & K1 Head Coach

Barry brings almost a decade of Muay Thai practice, learning from some of Scotland’s leading Muay Thai coaches. He has also competed and coached in boxing and K1, and is committed to helping people progress from their first session towards their own goals.

We’re bringing traditional Muay Thai to Fraserburgh, with a focus on sound technique, the sport’s traditions and a welcoming training environment.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Technique, control and problem-solving.

Developed in Brazil from Japanese judo and jiu-jitsu, BJJ is a grappling martial art centred on positional control, escapes and submission techniques. Training develops the use of leverage, timing and technique through drilling and practice with a partner.

Kris Wiseman · BJJ Head Coach

Kris is a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and brings almost two decades of combat-sports experience to the programme, with a focus on BJJ and MMA grappling. His record includes two wins under professional submission-only rules at the ADCC Scotland Invitational, alongside competitive experience in MMA and K1 and a WKA Scottish K1 title.

He is supported by the MMA coaching team: Kris Rafferty, Ryan Watt, Marc Simpson and Ryan Donald. Plans are in place to pursue a formal BJJ programme affiliation; no affiliation is currently being presented as confirmed.

Boxing

Skill. Movement. Confidence.

Boxing is a striking sport built around punches, footwork, defence and ringcraft. With roots in ancient combat sports, modern boxing developed in Britain as formal rules and gloved competition took shape.

Kris Rafferty · Boxing Head Coach

Kris brings almost two decades of competing and coaching in boxing. His own amateur career includes 17 bouts and a district title, while his coaching record includes title-winning fighters and multiple William Wallace Cup gold medallists.

Assistant coach Tyler Kerr brings nine years of competitive boxing experience, a 7–1 record and William Wallace Boxing Cup gold. Together, they support technical development, fitness and progression towards competition.
